Personal accounts pay 2.99% when the sender marks a payment as goods and services.
How this calculator works

Receiving a payment: the fee is the payment amount times the percentage, plus any fixed fee. Personal accounts pay 2.99% with no fixed fee. Business profiles pay 1.9% plus $0.10. Tap to Pay payments on a business profile pay 2.29% plus $0.09.

What to charge: to keep a set amount, the calculator works backward and finds the smallest payment that still leaves you with that amount after the fee.

Instant Transfer: 1.75% of the amount, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $25. A standard transfer to your bank is free but takes longer.

Credit card: sending money with a credit card adds a 3% fee on top of the amount.

Fees are rounded to the nearest cent, so Venmo may differ by a cent here and there.

What is the Venmo goods and services fee?

The Venmo goods and services fee is a seller fee. It is charged to the person who receives the money, not the person who sends it. It applies when the sender marks a payment as goods and services, such as when they pay you for an item or a service.

On a personal account the fee is 2.99%. On a business profile it is 1.9% plus 10 cents.

The 10 cents matters on small payments. On a payment of $9.17 or less, the personal rate costs less. Above $9.17, the business profile is cheaper, and the gap grows as the payment gets bigger. On a $500 payment you would pay $14.95 on a personal account and $9.60 on a business profile.

If a friend pays you back for dinner and sends it as a normal payment, you pay nothing.

What is the Venmo Instant Transfer fee?

Instant Transfer is the fast way to withdraw money from your Venmo balance to your bank account or debit card. It usually arrives within minutes. The Venmo transfer fee for this is 1.75% of the amount, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25.

On $100 the withdrawal fee is $1.75. On $500 it is $8.75, and on $1,000 it is $17.50. The $25 maximum starts at about $1,428.57, so a $5,000 transfer costs the same $25 as a $1,500 one. The $0.25 minimum covers amounts up to about $14.29.

A standard transfer is free. Venmo says it usually takes 1 to 3 business days to reach a linked bank account, and about 48 hours to reach an eligible debit card. If you are not in a rush, standard is the cheaper way to withdraw.

Does Venmo charge a fee to send money?

Not if you pay with your Venmo balance, a linked bank account or a debit card. Those are free.

Venmo does charge 3% when you send with a credit card. It is added on top of what you send, so a $100 payment costs $103. The easiest way to avoid it is to switch the payment source to your bank account or debit card before you tap pay.

How much should I ask for to cover the Venmo fee?

If you want to end up with a certain amount, you need to ask for a bit more. You cannot just add the fee to your price, because Venmo takes its percentage from the larger total too.

Use the “What I want to keep” option in the calculator and it does the math for you. A few examples:

  • To keep $100 on a personal account, ask for $103.08.
  • To keep $100 on a business profile, ask for $102.04.
  • To keep $500 on a business profile, ask for $509.79.
  • To keep $1,000 on a personal account, ask for $1,030.82.

Why did Venmo charge me $10 or $25?

  • A $10 fee is often an Instant Transfer of about $571. It can also be a goods and services payment of about $334 on a personal account.
  • A $25 fee is often an Instant Transfer of $1,428.57 or more, because $25 is the most Venmo charges for one. It can also be a goods and services payment of about $836 on a personal account, or a $833.33 payment sent with a credit card.
  • A fee on a payment you received means the sender marked it as goods and services.

How much can you send on Venmo?

Venmo’s help page says that if you have not verified your identity, you have a weekly spending limit of $299.99. That limit includes payments to people and to authorized merchants. Once you complete identity verification, it is possible to send up to $60,000 per week.

Most limits on your Venmo account are rolling weekly limits, which means each payment counts against your limit for one week. Venmo also notes that a payment may be declined for reasons other than your limits.

So a verified account can send amounts like $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000 within a week. Limits for a single transfer and for Instant Transfer are not listed on that page, so check them in your app.
