Shopify Fee Calculator

Your Shopify bill is never just one number. There is the plan you pay for, the cut Shopify takes from every card payment, and sometimes an extra charge if you use another payment provider. This Shopify fee calculator adds all of it up for Basic, Grow and Advanced, so you can see what each plan really costs at your sales volume.

Enter the average amount charged per order after discounts, including tax and shipping. Actual fee bases can vary by order.
Annual billing is charged upfront. The monthly total shown uses the annual plan’s monthly-equivalent price.
Shopify Payments processing rates are used for online card payments.
How this calculator works

Shopify Payments: estimated card fees equal the order value multiplied by the plan’s card rate, plus the fixed fee per order.

Another provider: estimated provider fees equal the order value multiplied by the percentage you enter, plus the provider’s fixed fee per order. Where applicable, Shopify’s additional transaction fee is calculated separately using the plan’s published rate.

Monthly cost: monthly-equivalent subscription price + estimated processing and transaction fees. Annual billing also shows the estimated subscription amount charged for the full year.

Effective rate: estimated monthly subscription and transaction costs divided by estimated monthly sales. If sales are zero, the effective rate is shown as N/A.

This is an estimate, not a Shopify invoice. The tool assumes the entered average order value is a reasonable estimate of the fee base and that the selected provider processes the orders being modelled. It does not calculate mixed-provider routing, discounts on individual orders, refunds, chargebacks, subscription taxes or other non-listed costs. Confirm your specific rates and eligibility with Shopify and your payment provider.

How much does Shopify take from each sale?

If you use Shopify Payments, every online card sale costs a percentage plus a flat 30 cents. On a $100 order that comes to $3.20 on Basic, $3.00 on Grow and $2.80 on Advanced. The higher the plan, the lower the percentage.

But the percentage is only half the story. You also pay your monthly plan fee, and that is where most people get their sums wrong. A plan with a lower card rate only saves you money if you sell enough to cover its higher subscription.

Shopify fees by plan (US stores)

Basic$39$292.9% + 30¢2.6% + 10¢2.0%
Grow$105$792.7% + 30¢2.5% + 10¢1.0%
Advanced$399$2992.5% + 30¢2.4% + 10¢0.6%

These come from Shopify’s US pricing page, and I last checked them on 13 October 2026. The “yearly” price is what you pay per month when you commit for a year. You can’t get it on a month-to-month plan.

Transaction fees and processing fees are not the same thing

People mix these two up all the time, so here is the simple version.

A payment processing fee is what it costs to take a card payment: a percentage plus a fixed amount. With Shopify Payments, that is the card rate in the table above.

A Shopify transaction fee is an extra charge Shopify adds when you use a different payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. It is separate from whatever your provider charges you.

So with Shopify Payments you pay the card rate and no extra transaction fee. With an outside provider, you pay your provider’s fee and Shopify’s transaction fee on top.

How to calculate Shopify fees by hand?

The sum is simple:

Monthly cost = plan fee + payment processing fees + any Shopify transaction fees

For card payments, work out one order and multiply. On a $100 order at 2.9% + 30¢, that is $2.90 plus $0.30, so $3.20. If you get 200 orders like that, the card fees come to $640.

For the Shopify transaction fee, Shopify’s own formula is (product cost minus discounts) plus tax plus shipping, then times your plan’s rate. If that adds up to $100 and your plan’s rate is 2%, the extra fee is $2.

That tax-and-shipping part matters. It is why the calculator asks for your order value including tax and shipping.

A worked example

Say you get 400 orders a month and the average order is $50. That is $20,000 in sales. You pay yearly and use Shopify Payments.

  • Basic: $29 plan + 400 × ($1.45 + $0.30) = $729 a month
  • Grow: $79 plan + 400 × ($1.35 + $0.30) = $739 a month
  • Advanced: $299 plan + 400 × ($1.25 + $0.30) = $919 a month

Basic wins, and its total is 3.65% of your sales. Grow’s lower card rate saves $40 a month, but its plan costs $50 more, so it ends up $10 behind.

If you pay month to month instead, and sell 200 orders at $50, the totals are $389 on Basic, $435 on Grow and $709 on Advanced. Basic is the cheapest again.

When does a bigger plan pay for itself?

At a $50 average order, Grow becomes cheaper than Basic once you pass 500 orders a month, which is about $25,000 in sales. Advanced beats Grow above 2,200 orders a month, around $110,000.

These points move with your order value. If your orders are bigger, you save more on every sale, so the switch comes sooner. The calculator works out your own switching points right under the plan cards.

One honest limit: it only compares fees. Bigger plans also give you things like more staff accounts and better reports, and those might matter more to you than a few dollars.

If you use another payment provider

If another provider, such as Stripe, is your main way of taking cards, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of your provider’s fee. That extra fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced.

Here is a $100 sale with a provider that charges 2.9% + 30¢:

  • Basic: $3.20 to your provider + $2.00 to Shopify = $5.20
  • Grow: $3.20 + $1.00 = $4.20
  • Advanced: $3.20 + $0.60 = $3.80

One thing about PayPal: Shopify says that if Shopify Payments is your primary provider, PayPal payments do not carry the extra Shopify fee. PayPal still takes its own cut. You can read the full rules in Shopify’s third-party transaction fee guide.

What this calculator leaves out?

This is an estimate, not an invoice. It works from an average order, so discounts, refunds and a mix of payment methods on individual orders can push the real number a little up or down. It also leaves out apps, themes, chargebacks, sales tax, international cards and currency conversion. If you sell abroad, Shopify lists those extra charges on its pricing page, so check there.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify charge per transaction?

With Shopify Payments, an online card sale costs 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. On a $100 order, that is $3.20, $3.00 and $2.80. You also pay your monthly plan fee.

Does Shopify charge extra if I use Stripe or another provider?

Yes. When another provider replaces Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Your provider’s own fee comes on top of that.

Are Shopify transaction fees and payment processing fees the same?

No. The processing fee is the cost of taking a card payment. The transaction fee is Shopify’s extra charge for using an outside payment provider. You can pay one, or both, depending on your setup.

Does Shopify charge the extra fee on PayPal?

Not if Shopify Payments is your primary provider. Shopify says PayPal payments are exempt in that case, though PayPal still charges its own fee. If you use PayPal without Shopify Payments, the extra fee applies.

Which Shopify plan is cheapest?

It depends on your sales. At a $50 average order on Shopify Payments, Basic is cheapest until about 500 orders a month. After that, Grow is cheaper until about 2,200 orders. Put your own numbers in the calculator to see where you land.

Is paying yearly worth it?

For most stores, yes. Basic costs $39 a month, or $29 a month if you pay yearly. That saves you $10 a month, or $120 a year. The catch is the $348 up front, so be sure you want to commit for the year.

Are in-person sales charged differently?

Yes. In-person card rates are lower: 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced. Shopify says transaction fees for outside providers do not apply to POS orders.

How accurate is this Shopify fee calculator?

It uses Shopify’s published US rates, and we check the maths by hand. It is still an estimate based on an average order, so use it to compare plans, not to predict your exact bill. We re-check the rates against Shopify’s pricing page regularly.
