Is TikTok Promote Worth It? The Real Cost Per Result (2026)
TikTok Promote is worth it when you choose a goal that earns money, like product sales, website visits or leads, and when each result costs you less than it earns. If all you want is more views or followers, it usually isn’t, because those don’t put money back in your pocket by themselves.
Rules last verified October 30, 2026 against TikTok’s Promote help pages and Promote Terms. Checked by Ajay Kumar.
Here’s how it usually goes. You boost a video for $10 or $20, the view count shoots up overnight, and a week later your sales look exactly the same. The views were real. They just came from people who were never going to buy.
I don’t think that makes Promote a scam, and I don’t think it’s a magic button either. It’s a paid ad with a very easy setup. The useful question is whether a promoted video can earn back what it costs, and you can answer that with a bit of simple math before you spend anything. That’s what this guide walks through.
TikTok Promote at a glance
- You need to be 18 or older to use it (TikTok’s Promote help page).
- The video has to be public and use original sound or commercially licensed sound. To promote a LIVE, you need at least 1,000 followers.
- In a 2022 guide, TikTok said around $10 could get about 1,000 views (TikTok for Business). Think of that as a rough example from TikTok itself. Your own cost can be higher or lower.
- Promoting one video won’t change how many views your other, non-promoted videos get.
- Results aren’t guaranteed. Once a promotion is running you can’t cancel it, and you only get a refund if TikTok fails to deliver it (Promote Terms).

Is TikTok Promote worth it? It depends on your goal
When you set up a promotion, the first thing TikTok asks is what you want from it. That choice matters more than your budget, so this is where I’d start.
| Your goal | Worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Product sales | Often | You can compare cost per sale with profit per sale |
| Website visits or leads | Often | Each visit or lead has a value you can track |
| Testing which video works | Yes, small budget | A $10–$20 test shows which hook gets clicks |
| Music (your own song) | Sometimes | Fine for a test push |
| Followers | Rarely | Paid followers may engage less later |
| Views only | No | Nothing comes back to you |
Notice the pattern. The goals that work are the ones where you can put a dollar value on each result. If you can’t say what a result is worth to you, you can’t tell whether you paid too much for it.

What is TikTok Promote?
TikTok Promote is the ad tool built right into the TikTok app. You pick one of your videos or LIVEs, choose a goal, an audience, a budget and how many days it should run, and TikTok shows it to more people in the For You feed as an ad.
The goals fall into a few groups: more views or profile visits, more followers, more website visits, and more messages or product purchases. Some accounts also see promotion packs. These are ready-made bundles of budget and duration. They save you a few taps, but they don’t get you a better price or better results.
One thing people miss: a promoted video is treated as an ad, so it has to follow TikTok’s advertising policies for Promote. A video with misleading claims, or with music you don’t have the rights to, won’t get approved even if it did fine organically.
How much does TikTok Promote cost?
There’s no fixed price. You choose the budget, and TikTok spends it over the days you pick. The only number TikTok has shared publicly is that 2022 example of about $10 for around 1,000 views, which is roughly $10 per 1,000 views. What you actually pay will move with your goal, your audience, where they live and when the promotion runs.
Two terms are worth getting straight here. CPM means cost per 1,000 impressions, so it’s what you pay to have your ad shown 1,000 times. Cost per result is what you pay for one specific action, like a click, a follower or a sale. If you have your spend and impressions, our CPM calculator will work out the first one for you.
For comparison, the TikTok benchmarks in our average CPM by platform guide put the median CPM for Ads Manager campaigns at around $4. Please don’t read that as a straight comparison. These are rough benchmarks, and real CPM changes with the campaign goal, audience, placement, location and timing. What it does suggest is that Promote is the convenient option, and convenience can cost a little extra.
How do you know if TikTok Promote will pay off?
This is the part most guides skip. Here’s the rule I use:
Profit per 1,000 views = profit per sale × sales per 1,000 views. Promote pays off when that profit is more than what you pay per 1,000 views.
Let’s put real-ish numbers on it. Say you sell a $25 candle on TikTok Shop. Once you take away the product cost, shipping and TikTok’s fees, you keep $10.50 on each sale. (Our TikTok Shop fee calculator will give you this number for your own product.)
- You spend $10 and get 1,000 views.
- 1% of those viewers tap through. That’s 10 visits.
- 3% of the visitors buy. That’s 0.3 of a sale.
- 0.3 × $10.50 = $3.15 in profit.
So you paid $10 and earned $3.15. That’s a $6.85 loss. To break even, the video would need to bring in about one sale for every 1,000 views, which is more than three times what it’s doing now.

Now change one thing. If that candle left you $35 in profit instead of $10.50, the same 0.3 sales would bring back about $10.50 and you’d be roughly even. If the video had a 3% click rate instead of 1%, you’d triple your sales. Small changes in margin or in how good the video is make a big difference, which is why I’d always run these numbers first.
How many sales do you need to break even?
Here’s the same check as a quick table. It uses TikTok’s example cost of $10 per 1,000 views. Find your profit per sale, then see how many sales those 1,000 views need to bring in just to cover the cost.
| Your profit per sale | Sales needed per 1,000 views to break even |
|---|---|
| $5 | 2 |
| $10 | 1 |
| $15 | 0.67 (about 2 sales per 3,000 views) |
| $20 | 0.5 (1 sale per 2,000 views) |
| $40 | 0.25 (1 sale per 4,000 views) |
If your cost per 1,000 views is different, the math is simple: divide your cost per 1,000 views by your profit per sale. At $15 per 1,000 views and $10 profit per sale, you’d need 1.5 sales per 1,000 views.
If you’d rather skip the math, our break-even ROAS calculator tells you the minimum return your ad spend needs. And if you’re not sure whether a 1% click rate is good or bad, our guide on what a good CTR looks like will help.
Is TikTok Promote worth it for followers?
For most small creators, I’d say no. The follower goal does bring in new followers, but you pay for every one of them, and a few hundred followers can eat a budget quickly.
There’s also a quality question. People who follow you because an ad caught their eye may care less about your next videos than people who found you on their own. If they don’t watch what you post next, your follower count goes up but your reach doesn’t move much.
Where it can make sense is when your account already earns money, say from TikTok Shop sales or brand deals, and you have a rough idea of what an engaged follower is worth to you.
Is TikTok Promote worth it for music?
As a small test, it can be. If you’re an artist, a $10 or $20 push will show you pretty quickly whether people stop scrolling for your track. Just remember the sound rule: the video has to use original or commercially licensed sound. You can promote your own song, but not a video that’s built on a hit you don’t own.
Watch saves and how many people use your sound in their own videos. Those tell you far more than the view count. If they pick up, it may be worth a bigger budget. If you only get views, I’d stop there.
Does TikTok Promote ruin your account?
No. TikTok has said that using Promote doesn’t affect the views on your other, non-promoted videos (TikTok for Business). The idea that one boost will get you “shadowbanned” comes up a lot in comments, but nothing TikTok has published supports it.
The real risk is more boring. If you promote a weak video, you spend money and don’t get much for it. Your budget takes the hit. Your account is fine.
Can people see that you promoted a video?
Yes. TikTok’s Promote Terms say promoted content is shown as advertising, so viewers will see an ad label on it. Most people are used to seeing these and won’t think twice.
Is TikTok Promote legit?
Yes, it’s TikTok’s own official tool and you pay through the app. What you should avoid are outside websites that sell “TikTok views” or “TikTok followers”. Those can break TikTok’s rules, and the engagement they sell is usually fake or worthless. If you’re going to pay, pay TikTok directly through Promote or Ads Manager.
How to promote a video on TikTok?
- Open the video you want to boost and tap the three dots (or the share arrow, depending on your app version).
- Tap Promote. If it’s not there, make sure the video is public and uses allowed sound.
- Choose your goal. If you want money back, pick product purchases, website visits or messages.
- Set your audience, budget and number of days. For a first test, $10–$20 is plenty.
- Add a payment method and confirm. While it runs, keep an eye on cost per result, not just views.
TikTok moves buttons around between updates, so if your screen looks a little different, follow what your app shows.
TikTok Promote vs TikTok Ads Manager
| Promote | Ads Manager | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Quick boosts from the app | Planned campaigns |
| Setup | A few taps | More steps and options |
| Targeting | Basic | Detailed |
| Tracking | Simple results | Full reporting and pixel |
Promote is fine for testing. Once you’re spending regularly, Ads Manager gives you far better targeting and reporting. TikTok also lets you link Promote with TikTok Ads Manager if you want to move over.
What to check before you spend money on TikTok Promote?
Promote can’t make people like a video. It just puts that video in front of more people. So before you pay, look at how the video is already doing on its own:
- Watch time: do people stay, or are they gone in the first couple of seconds?
- Completion rate: how many people watch to the end? A higher number usually means a strong hook.
- Profile visits: are viewers curious enough to check out your page?
- Click-through rate: on product or link videos, how many viewers actually tap?
- Conversion rate: of the people who tap, how many buy or sign up?
- Cost per sale vs profit per sale: once the promotion is live, if one sale costs you more in ads than it makes you, turn it off.
My rule of thumb: promote videos that are already doing well without help. If a video is struggling organically, paying to show it to more people usually just gets you more of the same result.
FAQs
Is the promotion pack on TikTok worth it?
A promotion pack is only a preset budget and length. Whether it’s worth it depends on the goal inside it. If the goal can earn you money, it might be. If it’s just views, probably not.
How many views do you get for $10?
TikTok’s own 2022 example was around 1,000 views for $10. You might get more or fewer, depending on your audience, location and the video. TikTok doesn’t guarantee any number.
Does TikTok Promote actually work?
It does deliver what you pay for, whether that’s views, visits or followers. Whether that’s good for your business depends on whether those results turn into money. The profit-per-1,000-views check above is the quickest way to find out.
Can you cancel a TikTok promotion?
No. TikTok’s Promote Terms say you can’t cancel a promotion once it’s running, and payments aren’t refunded unless TikTok doesn’t deliver the promotion.
Is promoting on TikTok worth it for small businesses?
It can be, as long as you start small and track what each sale or lead costs you. A $10–$20 test on your best-performing organic video is a low-risk way to see.
Can TikTok Promote get you sales?
Yes, if you choose the product purchases or website visits goal and promote a video that already makes people want the product. Track cost per sale, and stop if it’s higher than your profit per sale.
So, should you use TikTok Promote?
If you know your profit per sale and you have a video that’s already working, a small test is worth trying. If you’re hoping Promote will rescue a video nobody’s watching, or you just want bigger numbers on your profile, I’d keep the money. Start by finding your real profit per sale with the TikTok Shop fee calculator, then decide how much a test is worth to you.
