Is TikTok Shop Worth It? What a $30 Sale Really Leaves You
TikTok says it takes 6%. On a $30 sale, that is $1.80. But if a creator sells the item and you run an ad on top, you hand over $10.80 of that $30.
That is six times the number in TikTok’s fee table. The 6% is real, but it is only one of three costs, and the other two are the ones that decide whether TikTok Shop is worth it for you.
Short answer: TikTok Shop is worth it if the profit you keep before creators and ads is bigger than what you plan to pay them. For many items it is. For cheap items with thin margins, it often is not.
Checked on October 18, 2026 against TikTok’s US referral fee table. Rates can change.
How much does it cost to sell on TikTok Shop?
The 6% is only the start. You can pay up to three things on one order:
- Referral fee. 6% for most categories, and 5% for some jewelry and pre-owned items. TikTok works it out on what the buyer pays, including any shipping the buyer pays.
- Creator commission. You set this rate. You only pay it when a creator’s video or link sells your product. One 2026 seller guide says most rates fall between 5% and 20%.
- Ads. Optional, but many sellers use them to get views. Another guide puts ad spend at roughly 8% to 20% of sales.
On top of that you still pay for the product and the postage, and some orders get refunded.
One $30 product, three ways it can sell
Take a product that sells for $30. It costs you $9 to make and $5 to ship. The buyer pays no shipping, and there are no discounts or refunds. Creator commission is 15% of the price, and ads average 15% of the price. (The 15% figures are our example, not TikTok numbers.)
| How the order sells | Fee, creator and ads you pay | Profit at 6% | Profit if 8% applied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight from your shop, no creator, no ads | $1.80 | $14.20 | $13.60 |
| Through a creator | $6.30 | $9.70 | $9.10 |
| Through a creator, plus ads | $10.80 | $5.20 | $4.60 |
Same product, same price. Profit goes from $14.20 down to $5.20 depending on how the sale happened.

Is TikTok Shop worth it? Check how much room you have
Here is a simple way to answer it before you list anything.
Take your profit with no creator and no ads, and divide it by the price. That percentage is your room. Creator commission plus ad spend must stay below it.
- The $30 item has $14.20 left, which is 47% of the price. Creator 15% plus ads 15% is 30%. That fits, and you still keep about 17%.
- A $15 item that costs $4 to make and $4 to ship has $6.10 left, or 41%. With the same creator and ads, it keeps only $1.60. Still positive, but one refund or a pricier ad day and it is gone.
It is the same thinking as break-even ROAS and the Etsy Offsite Ads fee: you cannot judge a cost until you know how much profit is left before it.
So TikTok Shop tends to work for items with healthy margins, and tends to hurt items where cost and shipping already take most of the price. If your room is smaller than the share you plan to give to creators and ads (30% in our example), they can use all of it.
What the math leaves out
- Reach. A creator or an ad can bring a buyer you would not have reached alone. That is why paying 5% to 20% can still make sense, as long as the profit stays above zero.
- Refunds. A refunded order costs you more than the lost sale. Add your refund rate in the calculator to see it.
- Sales tax on the fee. If your business is registered in Texas or West Virginia, TikTok adds sales tax to the referral fee (since November 1, 2025).
What about the 8% fee people are talking about?
Some seller blogs, like beBOLD Digital, report that the referral fee went from 6% to 8% for most non-food categories on August 4, 2026. We could not find an official TikTok notice for this. TikTok’s own table, linked above, shows 6% for most categories.
If 8% does apply to you, the cost is 2% of the price: 60 cents on a $30 item. That is why the last column in the table is there. Check your actual rate in Seller Center, under your settlement statements.
How to check your own product
- Open the TikTok Shop fee calculator and enter your price, product cost and shipping cost.
- Set the creator commission you plan to offer, then add your ad spend as a share of the price.
- Look at the profit. If it is thin, use “Find my price” to see what price you need.
- Not sure how much ad spend you can afford? Try our break-even ROAS calculator.
TikTok Shop questions
Is TikTok Shop worth it for small sellers?
It can be, if your item has room for the fees. A $60 item with a healthy margin handles a creator and ads easily. A $15 item with thin margins often does not.
Is dropshipping on TikTok Shop worth it?
Your supplier cost and shipping come out first, so there is often less room left for creators and ads. Run your numbers before you list.
What percent does TikTok Shop take?
6% for most US categories and 5% for some jewelry and pre-owned items, according to TikTok’s table. See the full list in our fee calculator.
Is the TikTok Shop fee going up to 8%?
Some blogs report it. TikTok’s published table shows 6% for most categories, so check Seller Center.
Do I have to pay creators?
No. You set the commission, and you pay it only when a creator’s sale goes through.
The short version
TikTok Shop is worth it when your product has room. Work out your profit before creators and ads. If it is bigger than what you will pay them, you are making money from TikTok Shop. If not, the platform is making it for you.
