TikTok Shop free samples guide: 1,000+ followers to join, 1 sale in the last 120 days, and 14 days to post after delivery

TikTok Shop Free Samples: How to Get Them in 2026

Most guides still say you need 5,000 followers to get free samples on TikTok Shop, and that you can only have 5 requests open at once. Both numbers are out of date. TikTok’s own Academy now sets a lower bar to start, and the limits work very differently.

Here’s the short answer for US creators. To get free samples on TikTok Shop, you need to join TikTok Shop as an affiliate creator (1,000 followers, 18+, US-based) and have made at least one sale in the last 120 days. Then you request samples from the Product Marketplace. The seller has 7 days to approve and 7 more to ship, and once the sample arrives, you have 14 days to post.

Meeting these rules doesn’t guarantee every request, though. Sellers set their own criteria, and your sample limit can shrink if you miss posts. The easiest check is Creator Center → Manage Samples, which shows exactly how many samples you can request right now.

What are TikTok Shop free samples?

Free samples are products a seller sends to a creator at no cost, in return for content that helps sell them. The seller pays for the product, the shipping and the tax, and you keep the product.

There are three ways to get one:

  • Free samples from sellers. You request a product in the Product Marketplace or through a Collab Invite, and the seller approves or rejects it.
  • Refundable samples. You buy the product yourself, post content with the product link, and get a full refund, including shipping and tax, once your content drives the seller’s sales goal within 120 days. Sellers usually ask for 1 to 3 orders. Those orders only count once they clear the return period (usually 30 days), and orders you place yourself don’t count, so TikTok suggests hitting the goal within 90 days. If you miss it, a refund is up to the seller. There’s no approval wait, and these don’t count against your free sample limit.
  • Free sample campaigns. Limited-time events that show up as banners in the TikTok Shop Creator Center. You pick from a set of products and post by the campaign deadline.

Who can get free samples on TikTok Shop?

Under TikTok’s Creator Eligibility Policy, you can become an affiliate creator if you:

  • are at least 18 years old
  • are based in the United States
  • have at least 1,000 followers
  • pass age confirmation and identity verification
  • have never lost e-commerce access on TikTok Shop

That gets you into TikTok Shop. Free samples need one more thing: according to TikTok’s Guide to Samples, they’re available to creators who have made sales in the last 120 days. No sale yet? Refundable samples are your way in.

So where does the 5,000 number come from? If you join with fewer than 5,000 followers, you start in a 30-day Creator Pilot Program. During the pilot, you can only promote products from shops with a Shop Performance Score of 95% or higher, you can post up to 3 shoppable videos a day, and you can’t join campaigns (including sample campaigns).

You normally graduate once you’ve spent 30 days in the program and reached 5,000 followers. If TikTok tags your account as an “Extended Pilot Creator” over policy issues, you can’t graduate until that’s cleared. You can check your status on the Pilot Program page.

How to request free samples on TikTok Shop

  1. Join TikTok Shop as a creator. In the TikTok app, open TikTok Studio → Monetization → TikTok Shop for Creator → Join now.
  2. Open the Product Marketplace in Creator Center. Turn on the Free Sample filter to see only products that offer samples.
  3. Check the seller’s terms before you apply. Look at the commission rate and whether the product fits your audience. Sellers can set minimums for followers, average views, 30-day sales and posting rate. If a seller wants 5,000 followers and you have 2,000, don’t waste a request.
  4. Check your free sample limit. It’s shown in Manage Samples and again when you request.
  5. Tap Get Sample, then Request from Seller. Choose the size or color, and confirm your contact details and shipping address.
  6. Wait for the seller. They have 7 days to review it. If they don’t respond, the request is cancelled automatically. You can withdraw a request any time before it ships.

How many free samples can you request on TikTok Shop?

Your free sample limit is how many free samples you can have in progress at the same time. Two things set it:

  • Your creator level sets the maximum. It’s updated every month and rises as you drive more sales.
  • Your sample score decides how much of that maximum you can actually use. It’s updated daily, based on how well you’ve posted for samples over the past 30 days. A weak score shrinks your usable limit, and a very low posting rate can cut off free samples for a while.

TikTok’s sample guide for sellers lists these maximums for most creators:

Creator levelFree sample requests
Bronze and SilverUp to 20
Gold40
Platinum50
Ruby to Diamond100

Think of those as the ceiling, not a promise. The number you can use right now is the “Samples available to request” figure in Manage Samples.

How the limit goes down and comes back:

  • Each free sample request takes 1 off your limit, whether it comes from the Product Marketplace, a Collab Invite or an agency collab.
  • You get it back when you meet the posting rules, the seller rejects your request or doesn’t ship in time, you cancel before it ships, or you report a problem with the sample.
  • Overdue samples keep using your limit until you post for them. This is the change most creators miss.
  • Samples from coupons and refundable samples don’t count against your limit.

You can only request one of a particular item from the same seller. If you want several variations of one product, like different shades or sizes, TikTok’s Multi-SKU Sampling lets you request each one, but you have to post separate content for each.

How the TikTok Shop free sample limit works: creator level sets the maximum, sample score decides how much you can use, and overdue samples keep using your limit

What happens after you get a free sample?

You have 14 days from delivery to post, and TikTok reminds you 3 days and 1 day before the deadline. To count, your content has to be either:

  • a short video with the product link that stays public for at least 3 days, or
  • a LIVE of at least 10 minutes with the sample product pinned

If you need more time, you can ask for one 7-day extension under TikTok’s Sample Integrity Policy. Open the sample order in Manage Samples and choose “Unable to post within 14 days.” If the product arrives broken or isn’t what was promised, choose “Something wrong with this sample” instead. You won’t have to post, and your limit comes back.

Skipping a sample has a real cost. Your posting rate drops, and sellers can see it rated as Ok, Good or Better when they review your next request. Your sample score drops too, which shrinks your limit.

Why can’t I request free samples on TikTok Shop?

If the button isn’t there or your requests keep failing, check these in order:

  • No sale in the last 120 days. Free samples are locked until you make one. Try a refundable sample instead.
  • Your limit is used up. Look for open or overdue samples in Manage Samples, and post for them to free up slots.
  • Low sample score. Missed posts in the last 30 days shrink your usable limit.
  • You don’t meet the seller’s criteria. Pick products whose follower or view minimums you actually meet.
  • The product ran out. Requests fail if the seller’s stock or sample quota runs out.
  • You applied for the same product recently. After a request is rejected, expires or is cancelled, you have to wait 30 days to request it again. If you withdrew it yourself, you can apply again straight away.

For sellers: what a free sample really costs

Most guides stop at how to get samples. If you’re the one sending them, the more useful question is how many sales it takes to earn a sample back.

Here’s an example with a $25 product and free shipping. The rates are assumptions for illustration, so plug in your own:

  • Product cost: $6.00
  • Shipping label: $5.00
  • Referral fee at 6%, TikTok’s standard US rate (check the rate for your category): $1.50
  • Creator commission at 15%: $3.75

That leaves a contribution of $8.75 per sale, before returns, ads and other overheads.

One free sample costs you $11: the $6 product plus the $5 label, before tax. To find the break-even point, divide the sample cost by your contribution per sale and round up: $11 ÷ $8.75 = 1.26, so 2 sales.

The catch is that not every creator will drive sales. Here’s what changes as you send more samples, using the same numbers:

  • 1 sample ($11): 2 sales to cover it
  • 4 samples ($44): 6 sales to cover them
  • 10 samples ($110): 13 sales to cover them

So if only 1 in 4 of your sampled creators makes content that sells, that one creator has to bring in 6 sales just to cover the batch.

To check your own numbers, enter your price, product cost, shipping and commission in our TikTok Shop fee calculator. It shows your profit per order after the referral fee and creator commission. If you’re still deciding what to pay creators, see our guide to the average TikTok Shop affiliate commission.

TikTok Shop free sample cost for sellers: $8.75 contribution per $25 sale, so 1 sample costing $11 needs 2 sales, 4 samples need 6 sales and 10 samples need 13 sales

Free or refundable samples: which should sellers offer?

Free sampleRefundable sample
Who pays up frontYou (the seller)The creator
ApprovalYou approve each requestNo approval needed
When you payWhen you shipWhen the creator hits your sales goal (or if you approve a refund anyway)
Creator’s deadline14 days to post120 days to hit the goal
Best forCreators you really want to work withReaching lots of smaller creators

Many sellers use both. Refundable samples give you wide reach at little risk, since you mostly pay once the sales are already in. Free samples are a reward for creators who already sell well. Set your refundable goal at a level a real creator can reach, such as 1 to 3 orders, or nobody will take it up.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get free TikTok Shop samples with 1,000 followers?

Yes, 1,000 followers is enough to join as an affiliate creator. But you also need a sale in the last 120 days, room in your sample limit, and to meet each seller’s own criteria. Until you reach 5,000 followers, you’re also in the Creator Pilot Program, which limits which shops you can work with.

Can you get free samples without making a sale?

Not free samples from sellers. Those need a sale in the last 120 days. Refundable samples are open to all eligible creators, though, and they’re the usual way to get your first sale.

Do creators pay shipping for free samples?

No. For a free sample, the seller pays for the product, shipping and tax. For a refundable sample, you pay up front, and the refund covers the product, shipping and tax once you hit the seller’s sales goal.

What happens if you don’t post after getting a free sample?

The sample becomes overdue and keeps using your free sample limit until you post. Your sample score and posting rate drop, so sellers are more likely to reject your next requests, and repeated misses can cut you off from free samples.

How long does it take to get a free sample?

Up to about two weeks before it ships. The seller has 7 days to approve and 7 days to ship, and delivery time comes on top.

Can creators outside the US request TikTok Shop samples?

Not through the US program. You must live in the United States to be a US TikTok Shop creator. Other countries run their own TikTok Shop programs with their own rules.
