Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop: physical products allowed, software and courses need invite-only approval, e-books and printables not expressly permitted

Can You Sell Digital Products on TikTok Shop? (2026 Rules)

Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop? On TikTok Shop US, most sellers can’t. Digital products are prohibited unless TikTok approves you for its invite-only Virtual Goods category, and the things most creators sell, like printables, e-books, templates and presets, aren’t expressly listed as permitted there.

That’s not the end of the story, though. Plenty of people make good money from digital products with TikTok’s help. They just don’t sell the files through TikTok Shop.

Rules last verified October 31, 2026 against TikTok Shop’s US Seller Center policies. This guide covers TikTok Shop in the United States. Other countries have their own rules. Checked by Ajay Kumar.

Picture this. You’ve made a Canva planner that sells nicely on Etsy, so you open TikTok Shop, upload the PDF and wait. A day later it’s rejected. You switch the category and try again. Rejected again. Nothing is wrong with your listing. TikTok Shop simply isn’t set up for that kind of product, and once you know why, you can stop fighting it and use TikTok in a way that actually works.

Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop? What the rules say

TikTok doesn’t leave much room for guessing here. Its Prohibited Products Policy says: “Virtual or digital products are prohibited unless approved for sale under the Virtual Goods category.” The same policy allows physical items that carry digital content, like a DVD, because the buyer still gets something in the mail.

So the default answer is no. The only door is TikTok’s Virtual Goods category, and it’s invite-only. Sellers “must receive approval before listing or offering any virtual goods.” There’s no button in Seller Center that turns it on.

What the Virtual Goods category allows?

If TikTok does invite you, its Virtual Goods Requirements list the kinds of products it has in mind. TikTok says the list isn’t complete, so read it as a guide:

  • Software and apps, delivered with a license key, activation code or download
  • Digital games and in-game content, delivered with a redemption code
  • Online courses
  • Prepaid digital subscriptions
  • Virtual gift cards
  • Tickets to online events, and concert tickets sold at face value

Getting in also comes with rules:

  • $500 limit: no listing can cost more than $500.
  • 2-day delivery: you have 2 business days to deliver, or the order can be canceled automatically and count against your shop.
  • Redemption off TikTok: buyers redeem the product outside TikTok Shop, and your listing has to explain exactly how.
  • No refunds: virtual goods are generally non-returnable and non-refundable, subject to applicable law. Concert ticket refunds are supported when an event is rescheduled, postponed, moved or canceled.
  • Off-limits even with approval: auto-renewing subscriptions, resale tickets and loadable credits.

Look at that list again and you’ll notice who it’s for: software companies, game publishers, course platforms and ticket sellers. It isn’t built for someone selling a $7 printable, and I wouldn’t plan a business around getting an invite.

What about e-books, printables and templates?

This is the question most people are really asking, and the honest answer is: don’t count on it. E-books, printables, templates and presets aren’t expressly listed among TikTok’s permitted Virtual Goods. TikTok doesn’t ban them by name, but it doesn’t need to. Every digital product starts out prohibited, and these don’t match anything on the approved list. Unless TikTok approves you, don’t list them.

Online courses are the one common creator product that does appear on the list. Even then you need the invite, the course has to be delivered on your own website, and you can’t promise results like income or a job.

Decision flow for TikTok Shop US: physical products can be listed, approved Virtual Goods can be listed with limits, everything else should be sold elsewhere

Skip the “mail a QR code” trick

Some guides suggest a workaround: list a cheap physical item, like a postcard, and print a QR code on it that unlocks your download.

I’d stay away from it. TikTok’s Product Listing Policy tells sellers not to include anything that tries to “redirect customers off of TikTok Shop,” and it names QR codes and website links as examples. It also bans listing products “in any way that attempts to evade or avoid compliance.” You’d be risking removed listings and penalties on your shop, and paying to print and post something that should cost you nothing to deliver.

How to promote digital products on TikTok without breaking the rules?

This is where a lot of sellers trip up, so it’s worth being clear about the two kinds of content.

  • TikTok Shop content means product listings, shoppable videos and LIVE shopping. TikTok’s Content Policy says this content may be removed if it includes “links, references, or other calls to action that direct users away from TikTok Shop.” That covers website links, social handles, emails and QR codes. Never promote an outside store there.
  • Regular TikTok videos are a grayer area. You can make educational content about your digital products, but don’t assume that a non-shoppable video automatically makes outside purchase links fine. TikTok’s creator and traffic-redirection rules may still apply, especially if your account also promotes TikTok Shop products. Check the rules for your account before you send viewers to an outside checkout.

Safe by default: teach and show what your product does in regular videos, mention where it’s sold by name, and keep outside links off anything connected to TikTok Shop. If you also run a shop, keep your shoppable videos for your physical products only.

1. Sell the file somewhere built for downloads

Put your file on Etsy, Shopify, Gumroad or Stan Store, and use TikTok to build interest within its rules. TikTok doesn’t take a cut of sales on other sites, but each store has its own fees. Our Etsy fee calculator and Shopify fee calculator show what you’d actually keep.

2. Turn your best designs into physical products

That planner can become a printed notebook. Your digital art can become posters, mugs or T-shirts. With print-on-demand, a company prints and ships each order for you, so you never hold stock, and you can sell those products on TikTok Shop like anyone else.

3. Do both with the same design

This is the setup I like most. The physical version sells inside the TikTok app, and the digital file sells on Etsy or your own store. One design, two ways to earn. Just keep the promotion for each one within the rules above.

Illustrative profit comparison: what you keep per sale

Here’s a simple example with made-up prices, so you can see how the money works out. It’s gross profit after the fees and costs listed, not what you finally take home, because it leaves out ads, creator commissions, sales tax and income tax. The fees are current US rates from our calculators.

A $12 digital planner on Etsy:

  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Transaction fee (6.5%): $0.78
  • Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $0.61
  • Gross profit: about $10.41, around 87% of the price. There’s nothing to print or ship.

Etsy’s processing fee depends on which country your bank is in. This example uses the US Etsy Payments rate.

The same planner printed, $25 on TikTok Shop with free shipping:

  • TikTok referral fee (6%): $1.50
  • Print-on-demand cost, including shipping (example): $11.00
  • Gross profit: about $12.50, around 50% of the price.
Illustrative gross profit: a $12 digital planner on Etsy keeps $10.41, a $25 printed planner on TikTok Shop keeps $12.50

The printed version earns a bit more per sale, but only because it costs about twice as much, and you keep a far smaller share of each dollar. The digital file keeps almost everything, but your buyer has to leave TikTok to get it. Which one wins depends on your audience. Where you can sell digital products instead?

  • Etsy: allows digital downloads, and it’s where a lot of printable and template sellers start. If you’re torn between Etsy and your own store, see Etsy vs Shopify.
  • Shopify: sells digital files through a digital downloads app.
  • Gumroad and Stan Store: made for creators selling digital products straight to their audience.

FAQs

Can I sell ebooks on TikTok Shop?

Not as a regular seller. E-books aren’t expressly listed among TikTok Shop US’s permitted Virtual Goods, and digital products are prohibited unless TikTok approves them. Sell your e-book on Etsy, Gumroad or your own store instead.

Can I sell online courses on TikTok Shop?

Only if TikTok invites you to its Virtual Goods category and approves you. The course must be delivered on your own website, can’t promise results like income or a job, and the listing can’t cost more than $500.

Can I sell Canva templates on TikTok Shop?

Not unless TikTok approves you. Templates are digital downloads, and they don’t match any category on TikTok’s Virtual Goods list.

Can I sell digital products on TikTok for free?

Posting videos costs nothing, and TikTok doesn’t take a cut of sales you make on another site. The platform you sell on will still charge its own fees, and your promotion has to follow TikTok’s rules.

Can I put my Gumroad or Etsy link in a TikTok Shop video?

No. TikTok Shop’s Content Policy says shop content may be removed if it sends people away from TikTok Shop, including through links or QR codes. Keep those links out of shoppable videos, LIVE shopping and listings.

Will TikTok ban my shop if I list a digital product?

TikTok can reject or remove listings that break its Prohibited Products Policy, and repeated violations can lead to penalties on your shop. If you aren’t in the Virtual Goods program, don’t list digital products.

Is TikTok Shop worth it for digital creators?

Only if you also sell physical products. If your whole business is digital, TikTok Shop itself won’t do much for you. For the bigger picture, see is TikTok Shop worth it.

My take

TikTok Shop US is made for things you can put in a box. Unless TikTok invites you into its Virtual Goods program, don’t fight that. Keep your digital products on a platform that supports downloads, keep outside links away from anything tied to TikTok Shop, and if you want sales inside the app, turn your best design into a physical product. Before you price it, check the margin with the TikTok Shop fee calculator.
